SinFonIJA 11 - Wrapping Up

On October 11-13, 2018 the Eleventh Conference on Syntax, Phonology, and Linguistic Analysis (SinFonIJA 11) was held at the Institute of English Studies of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

The 52 participants at the conference came from 15 countries:
Argentine (1), Belgium (1), the Czech Republic (3), France (4), Germany (5), Greece (1), Hungary (6), Italy (3), Japan (1), Poland (12), Russia (1), Spain (3), Slovenia (2), United Kingdom (2), and the USA (7).

All in all, 47 (oral or poster) presentations were delivered during the conference, including the presentations by the invited speakers:

  • Cedric Boeckx ( ICREA and Universitad de Barcelona)
  • Franc Marušič (Univerza v Novi Gorici, Slovenia)
  • William Matchin (University of Southern Carolina)
  • Ian Roberts (University of Cambridge)
  • Tobias Scheer (Université Côte d'Azur)
  • Ianthi Maria Tsimpli (University of Cambridge)

The conference presentations were complemented by a Round Table discussion on Theoretical Linguistics within Cognitive Science, which featured a presentation by William Matchin, a neuropsychologist, followed by a panel discussion, in which the invited speakers shared their reflections on the themes raised in William Matchin’s talk and engaged in discussion with the audience.

As the local organizers of the Kraków edition of SinFonIJA, a cyclic annual conference held in the countries of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, we wish to thank all the participants of SinFonIJA 11 for their talks as well as for their contribution to the discussions of the conference presentations and to the discussion at the Round Table.

We also wish to thank the Head of the Institute of English Studies, prof. dr hab. Elżbieta Chrzanowska-Kluczewska and the Deans of the Faculty of Philology of the Jagiellonian University for all their support. The grants from the Faculty of Philology and from the Municipal Council of Kraków, which have helped finance the conference, are gratefully acknowledged.
