Department of Pragmatics and Translation Theory

Members of the Department pursue research on cognitive grammar, pragmatics (in particular relevance theory), linguistic, visual and intercultural communication, humour theory, digital humanities, as well as translation theory, including literary and specialist translation as well as translation criticism. Most of them are also active translators with considerable translation achievements, including works by Nobel Prize winners, poetry, essays and children’s literature, as well as academic and specialist texts. Members of the Department organise regular series of national and international conferences (Language of the Third Millennium, Relevance Round Table) as well as edit Polish and foreign journals (Przekładaniec, European Journal of Humour Research, Tertium Linguistic Journal). They are also members of the editorial boards of scholarly societies (International Society for Humour Studies, Kraków Tertium Society for the Promotion of Language Studies).
