dr hab. Katarzyna Bazarnik

Assistant Professor in the Section of Comparative Studies in Literature and Culture in the Institute of English Studies of the Jagiellonian University, working in the Institute since 1995. In 2007 she defended the PhD dissertation on Some Aspects of Spatiality of the Literary Work as Exemplified by James Joyce's Giacomo Joyce, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake (with a reference to L. Sterne, S. Mallarmé, B. S. Johnson and R. Federman) at the Jagiellonian University. Her next monograph (habilitation) was devoted to liberature, a multimodal literary genre in which text and its material shape constitute a meaningful whole. She teaches methods of literary research, history of British literature, multimodal literature, and translation studies. Her research interest include James Joyce, iconicity in literature, avant-garde and experimental writing and liberature.

She initiated and organised six Bloomsday in Krakow Conferences (1997-2008) and thematic Joyce panels at April Conferences (with Prof. Dirk Vanderbeke), and was involved in organising Digital Humanities Conference 2016, and IALS Symposium „Text-Image-Music” 2018. She is the author of Liberature. A Book-bound Genre (Kraków, 2016) and Joyce and Liberature (Prague, 2012), editor or co-editor 8 collections of essays, and 2 monograph issues of journal of literary translation Literatura na Swiecie devoted to J. Joyce and B. S. Johnson. She has published in James Joyce Quarterly, Spanish Joyce Papers, Teksty Drugie and Przekładaniec. Journal of Translation Studies. she is also a co-editor of two publishing series Topographies of (post)modernity (Jagiellonian University Press) and European Joyce Studies (Brill/Rodopi).

Together with Zenon Fajfer she runs "Liberature", an imprint of Ha!art Publishing House, in which she edited over twenty titles, including Polish translations of Stéphane Mallarmé's The Throw of the Dice Will Never Abolish Chance,  Raymond Queneau's One Hundred Thousand Billion Poems, Georges Perec's Life User's Manual, Herta Müller's box of poetic collages Der Wächter nimmt seinen Kamm, and J. Joyce's Finnegans Wake. She is also the co-author of Oka-leczenie (Mute-I-Late, 2000, 2009) and (O)patrzenie (Ga(u)ze, 2003), translator. She has been a guest of several literary and arts festivals, including "Day of Welcomes" in Letterkenny, Ireland, the official celebration of Poland's accession to the EU in 2004 and European Culture Congress in Wrocław (2011), as well as coorganised several editions of Ha!wangarda Literary and New Media Festival in Krakow and New York.

She has presented papers at over 70 conferences in Poland and abroad, as well as guest lectured at Polish and foreign universities, including 11. James Joyce Summer School in Trieste, University of Tokyo, Mills College in Oakland, School of the Arts Institute in Chicago. In 2002 Zenon Fajfer and she launched Liberature Reading Room (now a section of the Main Library of the Malopolska Province in Krakow), where she gives talks and workshops on experimental writing.

She is a member of International James Joyce Foundation, Polish Society of Aesthetics, and European Association of Modernist Studies.
